Protect your dogs as US first Screwworm Infestation In 30 Years has been reported! Your pets might be at risk

Keep an eye out

State and federal agriculture officials in Florida and adjacent areas have reported that US first screwworm infestation has been hurting the pets for some time now. They are warning the pet owners to keep an eye out for this infestation and look for any unusual sores on the pets' skin. They are larval form of blowflies and are native to warm, tropical areas. This is dangerous because it is a flesh-eating parasite and it poses a great risk to the lives of all the pets.

The officials and specialists are working tirelessly to contain the spread and the agriculture officials have already confirmed a case of New World screwworm in a stray dog in Florida. To add to the worse, it is the first such infestation in US in the last 30 years. Grown blowflies usually lay their eggs at the edge of open sores and it is there that the infestation spreads. It was in October that the screwworm infestations were reported in Florida and adjacent areas. State and Federal officials gathered to contain the parasite's spread but they failed. If you live in Florida, please take precautions and please take your pet to vet if any lesions or sores suddenly appear.

Hopefully, the officials will contain the spread sooner than everyone thinks but it is wise to be cautious to save the pets. Also, it is advised to keep your pets inside for as much time as possible to minimize the risk of exposing your pets to this infestation and leave the rest to the officials. Soon the infestation will be over and it is our duty to share this information to other pet owners.
